This week on Monday February 24th, 2020, the Men of George Washington Carver will be hosting an extremely important event in Cook Hall Lounge between 7:00pm an 8:00pm titled “Nutrition Discussion: Take Care.” The Men of George Washington Carver is an organization that transfer male students and freshman male students at Howard may join and its 3 pillars are manhood, brotherhood, and community service. The purpose of their event this week is to foster a discussion surrounding nutrition to encourage healthy eating habits which translates into healthy lifestyles, which supports sustainable mental and physical health. This workshop will also provide attendees with relevant tips for maintaining a healthy lifestyle through conscious eating in an affordable manner. All students are eligible to attend, and we encourage all students to attend such a needed event. Healthy eating decreases our chances of falling victim to certain health issues such as diabetes or hypertension.
Furthermore, we highly encourage all students to attend this important workshop to receive information on foods and diets that preserve our bodies. Unfortunately, the black community has suffered from many health disparities in the United States and have also been historically subjugated and mistreated by the healthcare system. For a more in-depth analysis of this, we highly suggest students read “Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present,” by Scholar Harriet A. Washington.
Alkaline foods and vegetarian and vegan diets prove to be phenomenal lifestyle choices that support overall good health.
We must take care of our mind, body, and soul, and healthy eating habits align with this initiative. Therefore, we are highlighting the Men of George Washington Carver and their upcoming event this week, as they foster a transparent discussion about nutrition and healthy eating!
